i would skip the uro for now. most of the ones for sale are often WC imports. and thye just dont thrive like the CB ones will.
go with a uro or a beardie if this is his first reptile.
i dont want a beardie. i love them, but i want something different. its really more my pet (id take care of it) but it would be in my brothers room and he would name it and that crap. i love the look of uromastyx and from what ive heard they are relatively easy. i have had herp experience. i like the 50gal tub idea. im planning on using playsand as a substrate and a shoebox for a hide. my main worries right now are diet and lighting because ive heard a lot of different things. if i do get one tho it will be CB, theres a store near my house that breeds them.
i wouldnt use a 50 gallon tub. i would house them in a tank. i would go with a 4x2 for an adult. they are very active. they like it hot, basking around 120-130 ive gone higher with no issues as well. they arent as tame as some others, my brother had one that was mean as sin. i had some that were calm as can be.
if you have the space then go for it. but read up on the real good before you buy. they are also prone to tail rot, and troubles with there tails shedding. so keep it real dry.

ok. now ive read on the innernet after doing some research that they need a uva light, a uvb light, and a full spectrum light, is this true? also for diet i read that beans are good and so is kale but how can i vary the diet more?
any of the good leafy greens, collards, kale, danelion, mustard, endive, escarole. and any good veggies green beans, snap peas, bell peppers, carrots and so on. mine never took a great liking to fruits. i also fed bird seed. the millet only. no sun flower seeds. and you can use the same seed for substrate as well. i did that for a while and it worked out nice.
like all reptiles yes they need the uvb lighting. as well as calcium and multi vitamin supplements. seems like you have ALOT more reading to do.
