Uruguayan crenicichla

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A few years back when "fishfarm" was doing one of his collecting trips to Uruguay, he was thinning some stock before his trip, and put an add up on the ACA site with a number of Crenicichla species.
I bought and had 5 wild caught Crenicichla saxatilis shipped to me.
You might want to check with him, he puts adds up here on MFK about collecting trips to Uruguay.
They were about 5" upon arrival, very healthy, and eating pellets.
Here's pic soon after arrival.

and after about a year

Thanks Duanes. I really want some of those saxatilis. If you are ever selling these, count me in. In all seriiusness, I would pay a pretty penny for them.

There really aren't commercial exports from Uruguay.

Fish that make the market here are from individuals who bring them back from trips with Felipe. The number of fish that you're permitted to bring back is quite limited and most people keep the fish that they bring back for themselves (i.e. not commercial activity).

Honestly, the best way to get Uruguayan pikes is to collect them yourself. Combine a great vacation with getting some great fish! I'm headed back on Dec 1-10.

I've collected and kept a few of the saxatilis-type pikes, ceilos, punctata, scotti, minuano and missioneira over the years. There's a range of aggression - I keep my ceilos divided - but nothing that enough tank size and hiding places can't solve.

Thank you Matt. Unfortunately, going to Uruguay to collect isn't my wife's idea of a great vacation. :)

If you ever decide to sell any of your Uruguayan fish, please let me know. I am very interested and willing to drive to DC.

I would love to go to Uruguay. Depending on cost, I may try to convince my wife. Do you organize any of these trips?

At the moment, I don't have any fish "yet", here in Panama and if I did, shipping might be tricky. Besides over the last few years, those Crenicichla did each other (or themselves) in.
The trips to Uruguay look really fabulous to me, beyond the fish there are those crnivores dream Uruguayan beef barbecues, amazing scenery, and when its cold in the US, its warm there.
Now that I'm half way there, one might be in my offing after getting settled in a year or so.
Only there isn't a cool down period here near the equator, so keeping those type fish might not be feasible. I may do it just for the experience.

My wife, daughter (3.5 at the time) and I all came on our first trip to Uruguay in 2008. We spent a few days in Buenos Aires, Argentina...took the ferry for 1 hr or so from BA to Colonia, Uruguay... saw the sights than met Felipe in Montevideo. Felipe lives in a little beach town and we got a cabana by the beach for the family. When I went away with the group of guys fishing, my wife and daughter went to another beach town (La Paloma) and had a nice vacation. A couple from Canada came last trip and, although the wife really isn't much into fish, she had a blast. Even caught a piranha. It's really a wonderful, safe, friendly place...and it's summer when it's winter here.

I really don't sell fish - mostly donate to support clubs (CCA, ACA, CCY, etc.) or more often keep the fish myself to remember the trip!

I try to go every couple of years. Felipe lets me know when there's a time slot available. There's a group of 6-7 for our trip Dec 1-10, which leaves a couple of spots open if someone else wants to join us. Contact Felipe about pricing, as people not collecting fish don't pay as much (because of no need for permit, etc.)

I'll have to give it a go sometime. I'm headed to St. Thomas in Dec. so won't be able to go along. I'll have to jump on this next time.

Thanks for all your help . I'LL have to come check out a CCA meeting someday.

Does anyone know where j ca. Source some Uruguayan crenicichla? I'm particularly interested in the crenicichla celidochilus. Thanks!
The best person to go with would be ken fish farm. Unfortunately he hasn't caught any celidochilus yet. He hit some spots he usually gets celidochilus and didn't any. How ever he's got some scotti and some sax types so far. I'd contact him even if u had a bad experience. He probably messed up he's been good to me although he has messed up before but nothing serious. In all honesty he's a good guy with good intentions and in regards to these fish that no one else imports sometimes u just gotta deal with him if u want the fish bad enough

That punctata looks great but I'm concerned with their aggression. I want to pair then out in a 75 and I have heard their conspecific aggression is off the charts. Any experience with them?
If u get them when they're young they could pair off in a 75 but punctata get decently big and thick I'd probably recommend something bigger long term wise but u could make do in a 75 for a long enough time u won't need to worry about it if u got them at ~5-6" mine were pretty aggressive and that's what the consensus seems to be with other pike keepers. Btws there are diff localities of punctata. Ken can get blue 33 and another type I forget. Rapps will get a diff type but not the blue 33 since it probably won't be from Uruguay
