My family owns the LFS, and i always take care of the rays we get in because nobody cares more about them as me =D, but we carry motoro stingrays from time to time, and use to carry the teacup reticulated rays and i never had any issuses with cleaning their tank, feeding anything.
But one day during a tank cleaning, i was scrubbing algae...
its a 4'x2' 120g and i was scrapping the back glass with my head turned. i thought i had accounted the rays were on the other side of the tank, but.....
BAM! stinger straight into my right hand-ring finger! i yank my hand out yelling HOLY F^%*, blood squirting out of my finger; it had swollen to about twice its size instantly. As i think my finger is going to explode i run to the office to grab some towels, then head down to the emergency room with my girlfriend.
When we arrive i sit in the lobby for about 10 minutes. during this time if anything touched my finger it felt as if it was flash freezing while burning unimaginably bad. *AFTER THE HOSPITAL GETS DONE GOOGLEING WHAT TO DO* they have me stick my hand in veryy hot water for about 30-45 minutes. after that the pain was minimal, but i still had a small not on my finger that was painful for about 3 weeks.
The stingray itself was a 12'' Disk Motoro stingray. unfortunatly 2 weeks after the incident the ray got some kind of bacterial infection and past away. =[

This was about a year ago, and has not deterred me from keeping stingray.
Maybe some of you can relate to my feelings. i feel like i have a connection to them now, i know what they are all about, and i greatly respect them!
This incident has fueled my fondness of rays.
We currently have 3 little healthy motoro pups that i take care of, and clean their tank regularly.

Bottom Line, don't underestimate rays, Those stingers work !

Cool story. Do you have pictures?

Heres a pic of the rays before everything happened they were all happy and hanging together =] the one taht stung me is on the right>>>

OMG sounds painful, do you still feel any pain in your finger? All the time you hear of people petting their rays but this just goes to show that it only takes a second and BAM your hit. Nice looking pup in the middle of first pic shame about the one that died i guess thats karma.

No, there isnt any pain or a bump anymore. It went straight in, hit the bone, then came right back out. the skin on the tail stayed attached and it didnt go in very far so nothing got stuck in the wound.

i got stung at a bay in san diego. had to go get treated at sea world. i still have the scar to this day. it was the worst pain i have ever felt. the stinging and bleeding is incredible.
