Hey all,

So I recently just snagged a 150 gallon off craigslist, and I've decided to take an old 55 I have and run as a sump under it. Problem being is its an old tank, with 1/2 inch glass, and I'm nnot trying to drill through that.

So I have to go with a different strategy to be able to run a sump in this tank. I was curious if anyone on here has some experience with that situation and what you did?
If I dont get any feedback on this I'll go with my super secret ideas and post the results here!

Thanks guys!

I've had good luck with HOB overflows but there is some risk they'll fail and cause a flood so I wouldn't use them where flooding would be terrible. Why not have a glass shop drill it for you? It'd cost the same or slightly less than a quality HOB overflow.

I use a HOB overflow on my 180, and I'd say I have to restart the siphon about 75% of the time after a large water change. I'm with Potato on this one - if you can get someone to drill it, go for it.

You can use HOB overflows but get 2 of them in case for some reason one tube loses suction, you will still have enough water draining. I have used a few different brands. CPR are real nice but I ran into a problem after a few years the Aqua lifter pump crapped out. Along with that, Eshopps makes a good one too that I have used with no problems at all for years.

I find thicker glass is much easier to drill, and not as easily cracked.
The only glass I've cracked while drilling is on small thin tanks, never the thick ones.
