I'm talking about those cheap metal-side pools with the frame, they come with a filter & liner. Would it be possible to set one up outside & keep fish in it? Would I be safe keeping any native fish, or introduced fish that live here in FL? I'm guessing I'd have to do some modifications to the filter, but my main concerns would be it overheating in summer and keeping it warm enough in winter.

Why not ? I used a 15ft diameter X 42" high to grow out baby Koi one year. I generally did not use filtering. The same pool is now at my sons house , it has grandkids in it in the summer and bluegills in the winter.
I dished down the center at least another 12".

yep go for it lots of people already do this.

it would be fine during the summer and im not sure about a port orange florida winter. but most like ly it is mild and you wouldnt have much trouble keeping it warm. a couple three hundred watt heaters in the sump oughta do it depending on the size of the pool

I'm planning on doing this with a 8' round 4' tall pool and I live in north central FL

Cool, I think I'm gonna try it. I've only been down here less than a year and all I can think of is how warm the winter is and the possibilities for fish & reptiles outside :) I'm on the coast, just south of Daytona...seems to be pretty mild here in winter, around 5 degrees warmer on average than inland.

i did a little looking into using kiddie pools for holding koi and found mixed information - some said that it worked fine and other talked about some algaecide that may be harmful to the fish. The mixed reaction was enough to scare me off.

Many POOL liners have fungicides in them, similiar to the fungicides they use on the inner lining of garden hoses.

If your fish a dying off left and right, and you can't figure out why.. This is why.

So, Be careful!

Been using them for 20ish years. None of mine have ever said they have fungicides in the plastic (has to be stated on the label, FDA and all that).

You can also but just the liners if you want to bury it totally.

Dig them half way into the ground and use the exces dirt to burm around the outside edge for insulation.

is there anything, other than filtration, that needs to be changed to house fish? like once you buy the pool do you still have to line it?
