Using an FX5 to quickly drain a tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use my Aquaclear 110 powerhead I put a hose on the adapter that came with the pump. The hose I use is that black hose that goes on the drain tube to your washing machine I believe that is 1" hose. I can empty my 200 gal in under 15 minutes, probably closer to 10 minutes. It is one of the best things i have ever done concerning maintenance. I keep saying I am going to do a video so everyone can see how effecient it is.

I used to do that with my fx5, run the hose out the window and could drain the tank VERY quickly. I loved my FX5!

Hook the connector to a garden hose by adapter and clamps. It surely the cheapest way to buy big hose. Then connect it to the output and then let the FX5 run. I emptied about 200 gallons of water in less than 10 mins. Just make sure close the output and turn off the FX5 before unplug or connect the output hose (FLOOD WARNING).

That's a great idea, thank you. I was going to buy 30' of vinyl hose, but it was $2 per foot and $60 is way too much.

What size of adapter did you use to hook up the connector to the garden hose?

I did not really use an adapter to connect them so I'm not sure about the size. What I did was connect the connector to the right size hose (very short about 1 ft) then push the other side of that hose into the garden hose which was cut off on 1 side no more metal part) and clamp it.

for water changes the drain on the FX5 is great.. i can do a 30% water drain on the 210 in 5ish minutes.. i put a 100 ft 5/8"id hose on the bottom of the FX5. and doesn't matter where i want to put the water, the hose is 100 ft., goes all the way out to the street if i want it to. i open the drain, then close the output aquastop valve on top so that it'll drain faster.

and then when it's done i hang the hose from the RO/DI filter in the top of the tank and about 8 hours later my tank is full again.

drainage hose is about $0.25 per foot at home depot

I use one of my FX5's every week to do my water changes. I have 2x 3/4" PCV pieces hooked together that i keep right outside my back door that has a extra FX5 connector hooked to one end. Every friday i just bring it in the slider, hook it up and away we go.. :) Takes no time at all to drain the 50-60% of water from my 300, takes way longer to refill though.. :(
