Using cycled filter from fw for sw????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok so I have some help on here. I have a 75 gallon that I am starting off with. I want a V lionfish, I don't want to spend a hell of a lot of money. I know saltwater is though. So I wanted to have some rock but I don't think I will sped the money to have coral and anneminies yet. I wanted to keep it simple with rock and a single lionfish and possibly a snowflake ( maybe). I have well water and my ph is around 7.8 and I have a acuaclear 70 that does like 250 gph and a Penguin biowheel or something like that filter that does like 350 gph. Is this enough? WHat about substrate? What should I use?

Why do you say forget everything that I know about fw filteration ? what makes the filtration so different?

The filtration is different because you will toss all your HOB & canister filters & buy lots of live rock (1 1/2-2lbs/gal) & a really skimmer.

here is my recommendation. predator tanks require robust filtration because of the waste generated.

75g tank with overflow, 20g sump, return pump, turbofloater 1000 (or multi) or similar skimmer, 100w heater, 80lbs of base rock and about 75-80 lbs of sand (unless you go BB).

keep it easy. this will give you good filtration and make the tank easier to manage. get the LR in early so it can cycle with the tank then give yourself a few extra weeks on the cycle (i say 6 weeks) before adding anything.

ahh.. this thread answers most of my questions. I am goin from FW to SW in my 75 also. I have a 350 Biowheel and a 265gph canister and had been told by LFS to run both with SW. Now, I think Im just going to get premium live rock and a Large Skimmer, prolly CSS 220. Oh yeh, dont want to run a sump if at all possible, will the skimmer LR combo still be enough filtration Puffer?

That's all I used on my 55g for 2 years. I struggled with nitrates >40 for that entire time. When I upgraded to a 90g RR tank, I added a 20g sump & seprerate 20g fuge w/cheato, a DSB & rubble, all plumbed together. Now, nitrates are usally .5-5. Never higher.

be warned, with a DSB... DSB has bacteria that will pull the waste and nitrates into the snad and convert it. the problem is that the sand will also absorb phosphates and other waste. since it cannot go on forever it will eventually fill with waste and you will have an algae bloom that will knock your socks off. besides that, if you keep a DSB you must keep your PH, Alk, and Ca in the right range or you will get a burp where the sand will release all the nasty at once and you will wake to a tank of green sludge.

don't do DSB is my recommendation. you will have to replace it in a few years anyways. just keep it at 1" or so.

a good skimmer and some LR is a good start and then just add some powerheads to keep the water moving in the tank. it will work fine if you have the right skimmer.
