Using gendered pronouns/names for your unsexed fish?

No never thought about this. Generally my fish don't come up in daily conversations. But when taking about my fish to my family members who don't know the types of fish I have or know which fish I'm referring to. I normally say the Big silver one or the big long one or the Black one. I will describe how they look is easier for them to know which fish I am talking about lol. Most times I just point That one keeps missing with That one LOL
couldn't have typed it better myself.

I don't like referring my fish as "it," it seems to de-personify them or something like that....
.... I often see people talk about their immature fish as "little guy" or "dude" etc. as well..

Calling something "it" feels like I'm referring to an inanimate object, so calling them HE or SHE is pretty automatic. Ya, 'he' is more common.
Sometimes I tag 'em with names that'll work either way, but it's less entertaining. Names tend to 'stick', & I prefer having fun with them... just like everything else!

Named my new a. Heckellii ”brando,” after marlon brando, even though it's a juvenile earth eater...just too handsome of a fish to care about gender
You know a Furniture company got sued by the Brando estate for naming a couch "the Brando" after Marlon Brando LOL. The company just paid off the Brando estate instead of going to court and stopped using the name.
so watch out! hehe

well I hope they leave me alone since I wont be making money with my Brando. >.> <.<

I remember i named when i bought home my 2nd palembang puffer to keep my first one "Homer" company and named the 2nd Barney... it was i think about 3 weeks later i learned that Barney was no longer a Barney, but a Marge...

Now i try and pick names that are uni-sex unless i know for certain its one or the other...

As for my family... they basically know my fishes names... at least my Fahaka's name... since every one seems to drawn to her...
