using live bait

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes but HOW do i catch them?

idk if lake erie has a good population of alewifes but if they do you can catch them with a cast net

small hook - no weight - small bobber, hook about 2 feet under bobber. put a piece of worm on the hook so it looks as natural as possible- no bunching, leave about a half inch hanging off. fish this around trees- brushpiles- sandbars and other structure- just make sure it is legal to use them as bait. Or just but a throw net for about 25 bucks and spend a couple hours learning to throw it.

1) Make a ball comprised of half cornmeal and half canned tuna fish.

2) Chunk it in the water where the live bait is known to be

3) Wait 20 minutes or so

4) Throw a cast net over the spot where you threw the cornmeal ball and pull it in

5) ?

6) Profit.

OR

1) Just sight cast with a cast net

OR

1) Jig a Sabiki Rig with a diamond jig attached to the bottom

I fish almost entirely saltwater though, and generally used artificial bait for any freshwater fishing I've done in the past (unless I'm going after catfish).

I use a dip net around brushes. Here i usually catch ghost shrimp and minnows and smaller gouramies.

Mostly its snakehead thats being caught.

I'm the opposite of you nugpuffer, I fish almost entirely freshwater. I have only one set of rod and reel for saltwater and I keep it well-oiled. PS nice name ;)

I use a sabiki rig when I fish for bait on lake MI

I think minnows are the only live fish bait u can buy, unless u catch some shads ;D which i have no idea how to catch one.

Go to your local bait store and pick up some shiners. Using an actual game fish is illegal in most states.

You can catch ANYTHING on a nice fat shiner.

Well if your fishing some where near the great lakes there will be no place to buy bait of this type. With the bans because of VHS. You'll want to check with your laws to see if you can catch bait from a pond or another body of water and use it else where. Here If you catch the bait while your fishing and use it in the same place its ok as long as the bait was legal caught. Using bait from other sources can lead to problems. Here in MI we can still use bluegills as bait from other places but not many other species. Lucky for me the pond I fish for bluegills has a creek that leads to the river where I fish for catfish.

true about VHS driving us all insane however I dont think bait shops are only "around great lakes"

where there is water/lakes/rivers there are always bait shops around, it always mom + pop stores that sells those as they're favorite fishing holes for locals/vistors so it does not always mean it has to be next to a massive lake.

and I always find that even chain pet stores sells minnows..... not the common fatheads/roaches etc.... though they're gettiing more and more common colored minnows in for feeders instead of rosy minnows.

I'm from a place where there are so many lakes/rivers though I'm right next to lake michigan about 15 miles east of me. I drive out west further from Lake Michigan to Chain 'o lakes, and theres literally several tiny bait shop there and here everytime I drive out somewhere even finding bait shop combo with gas stations in smaller towns all over the areas I have visited.
