Using live plants from the lake?

If the tank is kept clean this may not happen. However, I have not collected native plants but, I will get some this summer. Just cheack it for any little creatures befor you throw it in the tank (things like dragonfly larvea will kill and eat small fish). Good luck with the tank!:)

The problem with some temperate plants is that some of them are annual plants.
 
Eurasian water milfoil is a perennial. You shouldn't have a problem growing it as long as you have high light. In aquariums, just like in the wild, they grow up and then out, covering the top of the water column and blocking out the light. So if you plan on growing this you should take into account that any other high light plants will have a very hard time growing. You know the concepts, Watson, now apply them!
