Using pool as pond?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have been using a metal frame Intex rectangular @ 500 gal pool for over a year, used for Madagascan cichlids.
And just picked up a rectangular Bestaway @ 1000 gal pool a few months ago, used for overwintering pond fish and water lilies in my basement.
The 500 gal

The Bestway 1000

The Intex seems to be more sturdy as far as frame, and thickness, but at least so far, I don't see a need to reinforce either with pond liner.

What about using it outdoors? My garage isn't big enough. Best I can do in it is a 10' round and I'm looking for 12' minimum. :(

Totally off the subject of fish keeping but....

keep in mind that something like this outdoors can be considered an "attractive nuisance" in many states so if people (especially kids) enter your property and get hurt because of it you could be liable and if they do damage you may not have a lot of recourse. I'd preferably only place this outside if I didn't have close neighbors and/of if I had a way to hide this from view.

Kids are well...kids.

You could of course enclose it inside a locked shed (to stop kids that are younger), put up a sign (to warn kids that are older), or place it so that it's not observable or easily accessible as well although "attractive nuisance laws" have many variants state to state. Here is a link in case this may apply:

Absolutely great point. Luckily we have an 8' privacy wall around our entire back yard. We already asked the landlord and HOA about putting in an above ground pool and they said so long as we maintain the locks on the side gates, there should not be any problem.

Sounds like my post wasn't needed and like you already did your homework. I think it's a great option (and it gives me some ideas as well.)

I disagree. You made a great point. And even if I did my homework, others reading this might not have and it's definitely a major thing that needs to be taken in to account when putting up anything outside of the home.

I think we're going to look at the hard walled pools that are made to withstand weathering as they seem to be a more long term option. I just have to find someone with one out here.

I am seriously contemplating on doing the square 1000gal, like Duane's, for my CA growout just to get an idea of how much it will cost me in energy $$.......to consider if I should build my 1000gal plywood tank.

BTW, check Craigslist, people are always trying to get rid of pools.........sometimes they are free because people just want to get rid of them and don't want to deal with the removal themselves.

I'd be cautious about a used plywood tank. Hopefully you can find how it was constructed.

The tank itself is in good enough shape. It's the stand and plumbing that needs work. Wobbling stand I can deal with, easy to reinforce. Broken pipes that I don't know where they go, that's a bit tougher
