using powerhead wavemaker in a fresh water tank worth it? would my flowerhorn appreciate it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think a flower horn would even know what a river is as they ae created in captivity. How ever the power head if rippling the water surface helps oxygenate the water. There are some fish though that do better in fast moving water. Not sure though that a flower horn is one of them.

I depends on a how big the tank is. As long there is a place for the fish to "rest" with little effort. In bigger tanks the fish may enjoy it. Gives them a little exercise

Cichlids that might appreciate wave action, could be the goby cichlids of Lake Tanganyka that live within the surf zone.
Although FHs are basically man-made hybrids, they do originate with riverine species, and could live within a surf style environment as long as it wasn't too drastic. Since they are riverine, a more natural environment would be a more linear flow along the length of the tank.

I had a Kamfa once that would park right in front of the eductors on my return....just swam there for hours and hours....so like Duanes said, a constant current may be a better idea...

It can be tricky picking the "right" powerhead. You don't have a reef, and yo u don't really "need" a powerhead....but all aquariums can use good circulation...that's just plain true....but picking one based on what? Water movement? Do you want the plants to move simulating a river bottom? Or are you going to just point it randomly? The powerheads I have used vary greatly in proportion to how much one is willing to spend....and prop type powerheads are better than impeller type...I.m.o...butnsize is a factor as well....a lot of movement usually means bigger and those take up space. The ones that have the motors outside the tank and drive the prop inside the tank magnetically are variable speed, awesome to say the least, but VERY expensive. Do some research and play it cheap to begin with. If money isn't a concern, get the Vortex variable line and be done with it....
