Using salt to treat Clown Loaches with whitespot

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1. I believe salt and heat to be the best and safest for loaches

My usual dosage is 2 tablespoons per 5 gallons. In severe cases I have done 3 tablespoons to 5 gallons on a variety of loaches with no problem

NB, I dont have ghost knife

On a 550L tank 58 tablespoons

This dosage must be achieved over more or less a 48 hour period Not all at once!!!!

Also remember that after a water change you need to replace to correct dosage
When doing salt and heat at same time, dont take temperature above 30 degrees and increase aeration if needed

"Is that 1 tsp per gal?"

Yes but keep in mind it is a harsh treatment(but so arent any meds in regard to loaches) and monitor for signs of distress as some individuals will tolerate the salinity better than others.

Skip the heat/salt method....use a half dose of Paraguard and see how the fish behaves, if it handles that well up it to a full dose. Paraguard is easy on all fish, scaleless included. I've used it with my loaches, catfish and eels with no ill effect.

had my temp up to 32 for bout 5 days, back to 30 now. Been vacuuming the sand every second day, spots seem to be dissapering. Decided not not add salt in the end. Not sure if paraguard is available in australia but if i ever see it i will def get some to keep on hand

Only 1 spot remains....been about 3 weeks since i first noticed ick in my tank.At th end of last week only one CL still had a few spots, i continued with my heat and vacuming treatment. A day after i notced the last of the whitespot to dissapeare from my clowns i noticed 1 single spot on a defferent one of my CL, it is still there, im hoping this is the last of it, tank is still at around 31.... fingers crossed it gone soon. In the end i decided not to use salt as i read so much conflicting info regarding the saft of salt with CL

sorry was unaware you were in Australia. If they have seachem products they should have paraguard though.

A bit late to this thread. I just recently had an ich outbreak with my clowns due to a recent purchase. I caught it and started treating fairly quickly. I got the temp up to 83-84° and used Kordon Ich Attack. Supposedly an all herbal formula. Worked well and didn't seem to stress the clowns out much at all while dosing the tank. I've also used Kordon Rid Ich at about 3/4 dosage and that worked as well, but seems a bit more harsh to the clowns while adding it to the tank.

Im not sure why but it seems as though we cannot get paraguard into this country, done a quick google serach and came across a Q+A on the seachem website and the said they were unable to get in in to the country...

may have something to do with the ingredients not being allowed in your country maybe I'm not sure. If they are clearing up from the heating method that's good to hear at least.
