I achieved my worthless degree in Ichthyological taxonomy with a minor in paleoichthyology. To pay the bills I had to become an electromechanical engineer which has been my vocation since 1985. I've learned a bit about the hobby from being active in it for over 50 years. I've kept oddball species since way before it was cool to do so.

Why was it worthless?? Why didn't you pursue a career in biological sciences or along those lines? How old were you when you started in the hobby?

Most of my training was in field studies. You have to understand, this was back in the era of 'natural' sciences. Soon afterward, computer technology began its rise and all the paying jobs shifted to high tech. Even the natural sciences became compartmentalized into specialties. I had neither the inclination (nor the funds) to continue with more college than was needed to become a physician. I received a couple of small research grants. When that money dried up I opted for the Navy and its advanced technical (vocational) training. I wound up operating and maintaining advanced gun and missile guidance systems. That level of electronics is what I'm still working on today in the private sector. Only now, instead of making $35K/yr as a sailor, I'm making over $100k/yr in the civilian workforce (plus my Navy pension).

Gary usually disappeared when the sea stories started up. Hazel had quite a few of them which was unusual since she only did 3 years in the enlisted ranks.

Hazel like to talk, she ran for mayor but no ideal if she got elected, this was after I was in the navy and stationed on north island. she was working at a 7-11 on palm avenue and 2nd street, she was a very nice lady and whither she knows it or not had a large influence on my life.

Hazel was a city councilwoman but, she never ran for mayor. She campaigned for mayor Dedina when he ran for the mayoral spot.

That must have been the time, all she said was she was running, tho may have said campaigning,. this was what 35 years ago or so?
