Right so I’m setting up a tank in the new year, and I have everything I need apart from a filter, I have chosen the one I’m going to use but I’m stuck between weather or not to get the one with a UV steriliser built into it?

I tend to battle brown algae a lot at the moment so will this eradicate this?

The tank will be heavily planted, house only one Channa Pulchra and will be 25gal

Will the uv effect plant growth at all?

Any information would be very helpful!

Thanks a lot!

In my opinion the 9-15 watt UV cannisters are not going to do what you are hoping. At best they will help eliminate grren water.....if your tank gets natural sunlight could be an issue.....I do not think even UV powerful enough to sterilize the water would get rid of algae on surfaces.

I agreed with this. Im using a De bary 25w uv filter after my returnline from my sump on my 275L tank and still fighting brown algae. So the uv filter doesnt help controll algae in that way and im kinda fond of brown algae in my tanks. It makes the tank look more natural

I don’t mind it too much but it can quickly take hold of the tank, and ends up covering my java fern! I’m hoping more plants will help battle the problem

More fastgrowing plants and do wc more frequently. I know the channa genus doesnt like wc but i change about 30% every week in my channa pulchra tank with six individuals. And once a year i give them a cold period for about 2 months to make it more natural for them. And during the coldperiod i keep the water around 18° celsius

I’m doing a 30% water change every 2 weeks, also doing the cold period at the moment, tank is currently at 17-18degrees, can you suggest and other hardy plants?

Thanks

I am using sunsun jup 22 uv sterilizer and I find it useful... there was once I forgot to turn it on while going holiday and came back a week later to brown algae all over the tank

Now once a while I will have algae growing on but very small amounts...

My tank is in my car porch so it does face direct sunlight

I mainly uses vallesneria, duckweed and anubias. I have some crypt in my tank but not much at all.
