Uv light overexposure to fresh water fish will kill them?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Gordon, what brand, type and wattage is the UV light?

Is it installed inline on a canister filter or separate water pump?

What size in gallons or liters is the aquarium?

Hi, it's a Gako Submersible UV Sterilizer light 6W. it's just a canister light. The aquarium is 32 litres.

Thanks for the info but I can't find anything online about this manufacturer.

How long has the tank been set up?

Can you post the water test results?

That type of light is not even safe for humans. It's made in Mainland China with the full light bulb shining into the tank just like an aquarium light.

Tell the grand kids to take the goldfish to the Optometrist. Their probably blind from the light. Worst if they are the bubble eye type. I seriously would have them remove the light and not use it because it will hurt the kids too.
If you look at the manufacturer's Certificate of Conformance, it is for the power adapter. Not for the light itself. Very misleading. Sad....they even go as far as displaying the CE rating which is very hard to obtain. Again, most likely is for the power adapter only. CE rating is like the UL rating in the states.

Kendragon, thanks for chiming in. Where did you find the product info Gordon has for a UV?

Google. Type: submersible UV Gako. alibaba

Got it, thank you! I cannot believe stuff like this is sold to unsuspecting people.

I've helped a UV manufacturer get UL approval and it is not easy. Believe it or not, many good UV available are not UL approved.
UL ensures protection to the public. UV rays must not be exposed, power must go off automatically when unit is opened for servicing, indicator light for when the unit is on and auto shut off in the event of overheat.
