uv or not to uv

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have recently invested in a Pondmaster 18w UVC (Quartz + Phillips tube) and I just wished that I invested in it sooner.
My water has always been clear, but this has made it clearer.
I definitely notice that my fish are also happier.

IMO very worth it!

In theory, it makes sense considering in this sense, the fish may not develop the proper immunity to particular foreign agents which could otherwise be registered by it. This is only a theory though. It may be possible. If you feel the need to use UV sterilizers, it's your personal choice but it is not absolutely necessary.

Wish I could express myself that way in English, that's exactly what I meant ;)

My friend at the LFS said he can tell when he gets fish from wholesalers who have kept them in a somewhat sterile environment (UV). According to him they tend to be a lot more sensitive.

But for us, the customer, I see no issues using UV at all.

yes, exactly

To kill parasites as well as to offer all other effects of UV lights I highly suggest a flow rate of 10 gph per 1W of UV strength. In other words 150 gph for a 15W lamp.

As for UV lights preventing our fish from developing a full immune system, I've never read any science to support this and have read several articles to discount it. Fish do not become 'immune' to parasites. On the contrary, when our fish are at full health such as when the water quality is at it's best, they are most capable of fighting off the effects of disease.

I use a 36W Turbo Twist for my 200 gal (7'x2'x2'). I believe its rated to treat up to 500 gallons. I use my over-engineering math and divide the rating by 2 and it should be good for up to 250 gal.

I have a UV sterilizer in my tank with seven 10" goldfish (similar to comets), these fish are very dirty. The UV really helps with preventing my tank from turning into pea soup. Two years ago, the bulb had burnt out after 11 months and I took my time ordering a new one. I had kept the same water change schedule, but my black moor developed a fungus on her eye and died shortly after. I knew if I had kept my UV running, that fungus problem would never had happened. :wall:

The second time the bulb burned out, I had anticipated it and had the replacement on hand. No problems with water and the fish are very healthy. :goldfish:

Overall, I'm glad I got it and worth the money
