uv questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't know squat about UVs (other than that they work) and I have to say that Midnight asked a pretty straitforward set of questions and got the run around on this one...

Acting like a tool is worse than not answering at all.

So: For an (indoor?) pond of (how many?) gallons with an algae problem...and an 18W inline UV...what should the flow rate be...and should it be left on 24/7?

And: How would these be different for a tank/tank system of similar gallonage with a primary focus of preventing ich/other nasties from popping up/spreading among tanks?

And please don't refer me to some book (that I don't have).

pond section would have been less help.
and i asked for answers to a few questions, not the life story of algae and uvs.
i guess you missed the part about,go away.if you were a nice person i wouldnt mind.
but i can tell your a stuck up stubborn fool.

my guess is its just like over filtering, why let it run 24/7 if its already done its job.
once my waters clear i will use it on a timer and im sure it will work fine. ;)

UVs are all about the time the tube/bulb comes in contact with the water

with a UV desighed for a tank it help with cloudy water but it main purpose is to help with parasites and othe harfull bacteria the water passes throw a tube no further than a few mm away from the tube/bulb

whith a pond UV its sole purpose it to get rid of green water

the normal sizes of UV for a tank are 8w,15w,25w and 30w you can get much larger but the sizes stated are normal for a tank

buy leaving the UV on a tank turned on 24/7 it helps keep the parasites at bay their is no point in seeing whitspoit/ick in your tank and then turning the UV as it will not kill a full out break of white spot but it will slow it down when its in the free swimming stage

what would be the point in turn a UV on only when you think you have a problem buy the time you have spoted the problem it would be to late and you would need meds at that point and when treating with meds you need to turn the UV off

i have no idear with a pond UV as i dont have a pond but if i did then i WOULD POST IN THE POND SECTION one thing i will say is if you are using the pond UV to control green water then comen sense tells you that buy leaving the UV on 24/7 will stop the green water before its visable

UV = for a tank ultra violet steraliver
UVC = for a pond ultra violet clarifier

diffrent names diffrent uses FACT

see theres your problem,cant read.
where does it say just turn it on when you see something?
i read 6hrs a day,few times a week,on a timer,but nothing about just when you see something.

but if i did then i WOULD POST IN THE POND SECTION
and if i was an *** like you i would NOT post at all.your point? :screwy:

hears you origanal post

i just got a uv sterilizer from lowes.
its an 18 watt one.
will a 200gph pump be good for it?
and it doesnt say what side is in and out.
does it matter what way it flows?
and also, after i get rid of the green water, can i just turn it on a few hours or a day a week?
thanks in advance

you stated you have a UV steralizer which is ment to be for a tank not a pond this is the main reason i replyed to the thread

you also asked if or when it should be turned on and off

to clear green water in a pond you need a UVC (ultra violet clarifyer) but you would know that if you posted in the pond forum

if anyone needs banned its you,i said go away a long time ago.lol
