i'm going to add a uv sterilizer on my 20 gal planted tank in order to keep blooms down. at the same time, i'm gonna add a fluval 205 or 305 and i want to add a sterilizer on the output. do you think i can get away with using the hose that comes with the filter or should i buy a different kind? if so, then what? also, what time lengths should i leave the uv sterilizer on and how often? i thought that if you leave it on too long it can kill beneficial bacteria right? thanks.

a black hose will be more efficient. i leave mine on 24/7.

I have been told that turning a light bulb on and off shortens the life span of bulbs.
I do not know if that is a rumor from the bulb manufature to have you burn up you bulb hours, or what. I do 24/7.

that's also what i know... try to keep it 24/7 i just recently purchased an aqua uv 25w and asked them if the black hose was necessary or would it be better... the answer i got was no. either black or clear or white will do the same job with no benefit nor advantages. my opinion is that if the hose barb that comes with the uv will fit the filter you have might as well cut and and put it after the filtration which is going back to the tank. but still it depends on what type of hose you have. i just have ordinary vinyl hose from marinedepot.:)
