UV sterilization....what are you using?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh ok, but even with that sleve removed it performed for 15 yrs.:) My uv sterilizer lasted about 3 yrs the salt quickly damaged it.
They are more expensive than a lot of other brands. Their bulbs are supposed last considerably longer than other bulbs. Instead of changing the bulbs every six months, we ran ours for five years. We managed to break the replacement bulb and the ballast because it had been so long since we first put it together and set it up.

The protective sleeve is also supposed to be replaced periodically. When you start replacing everything, (light bulb, ballast, protective sleeve), it is almost the cost of a new unit. All that said, I believe in this line of UV sterilizers.

Thanks for the reply..I have priced these out and they are still one of the most expensiveout there....but maybe quality is worth it.
I have toyed with the idea of making one myself....I am journyman electrician aftdr all....and the parts are easy enough to find...I might just have to try it! I could build it custom....any size I want. ..

OK, I'll show you, but don't judge...I got the "Green Killing Mahcine"...LOL

When I was still cycling my ~260G a year ago, I had the worse algae/bacteria bloom and I did not have the patience to wait. Even with mass water changes two weeks and no change.

I gave in and purchased two of these. I let it run for 4-5 days straight and it cleared up my tank completely! Since then, I just put them on a timer and both are still in my sump (see in second picture)

I'm sure there are many "better ones", but I like the fact that I was able to put both in my sump chamber and plug in - no additional plumbing and pumps required. It was literally plug and play. The best part was it worked and I've kept ever since.

The best part of keeping fish is you are free to keep fish in your way. I would never judge a "cheap" fix if it works! I have actually heard good things about those and other in sump/tank uv sterilizers....I have also heard the bad....but again, whatever works. Many people don't even advocate the use of UV because they feel it isn't necessary. I have seen results to the contrary and will continue to use them...even cheap ones.

It could be a sign of "maturity" with the cost issue prominent in my thinking these days....or just old man reasoning...hahah!!!
I can't believe what $100 doesn't do anymore! I have a friend who payed ovr $1,000 for his UV....and it is still just a hobby with him....unfortunatly, he didn't realize until later that he didn't need a 75w UV sterilizer on his 210g....

Haha, that's true Bold. It wasn't actually the cheapest either, but I did do some quick research and decided to go with it. I probably could have done with just one...but it seem a bit low for my size tank so went with two. Anyway, I would recommend since I had positive results with it.
