UV Sterilization

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use a AquaMedic 9watt on my 120g. It keeps the tank very clear. It did take a few days when it was installed to completely clear up.

On my 210g that I'm still setting up I will install an 18w turbo twist.

I now consider UV's a permanent part of my filtration system and will not go back to not using them.

I agree DMD123. Due to the warmer weather, I do not use a heater. The water temp right now is 82 degrees. So no worries with increased temps with the uv. So far so good.

I use a 9w on a 1000g pond and it is crystal clear. I think the ratings don't mean too much. Of course the filter does its job very well, so who knows. Different combinations work.

Well, the ratings are for actually killing bacteria and parasites... If you're just using it to clarify your water, you could get away with significantly less wattage and flow.

You (and anyone else with a UV) should post some before and after pics.

before 40W UV sterilizer (connected to the return of an FX-5):

I have a 13W UV on a 1500G Outdoor Pond in Full Sun the whole day. And its crystal clear. Although I think the two 300G stock tanks full of all sorts of random biomedia and tons of plants are doing most of the work ;) Big Tilapia = Big Bioload. The whole system only runs on 2000GPH and the params (well...ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites. Certainly not the pH!) are all 0 :D

But yea, definetly gonna have a low flow, high wattage, UV on my 135 once its finally set up :)
