 Those are the types of questions I'd like to have answered.
I'm new to UV sterilizers, but I was under the impression that the ammonia would still be present.

uv only kills the living.before or after the tower is fine.....i would rather run filtered water thru both the tower and uv......keeps the muck down

when starting up the tower leave the uv off for a couple of weeks.

never too much bio filtration !!!!

How about a prefilter on top of the tower? I'm thinking about making it swappable between my 265 and 300.

:iagree: with johnptc.

If your going to have a pre-filter, have it before the UV (less cleaning of the glass sleeve).

First, what's the chemistry of the water coming out of your filter? There does need to be enough food to feed a bio-tower.

If you have any ammonia/nitrites coming out it would be worth it. If your test kit doesn't test that low, try the tower for 6-8 months...you'll be able to see some growth in it if it's doing anything.

And then there's always the cool factor.

well, my filter is doing it's job, which is why I wanted to put the pump in the tank. If I get a pump with a sponge on the intake that should keep it clean enough, no?

i have a uv built in to my canister it only kills free swimming bacteria. ithelps i would put it after your biotower/prefilter as the bio media will get most nutrients and then all the stuff left over gets zapped!!! helps prevents ick and other diseases too.

hmmmm I'll have to figure out if that would be possible.

16 Watts wont sterilize too much . . . I refer you to P. R. Escobal (check your library - - - you know that big building with all those books that we went to before the Internet came along :) - - - for his somewhat technical manual) otherwise you may be wasting your efforts.

Emperor Aquatics has a lot of info on their web site also.

I've just spent the past year & a half researching & testing UV's so be warned that there is a lot of false & misleading info out there. Trust Escobal - - he is the master.
