Uv Sterilizer For 360 Gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey guys. Sorry I have been at work. But i mainly wanted to throw a uv on it for precautionary reasons. No specific reason at all. It will be by a couple windows, yes. But the windows have curtains and blinds which are closed all the time. I've never had an algae issue with any of my tanks unless some how I left the light on for far to long. :)

While I freaked out every time my fish sustained a terrible gruesome injury, I realized that they healed very quickly, regenerating parts (lips, tails) that had been sliced off.

The use of UV to improve fish immune function is called redox balance or redox potential which can only be achieved with a true UV. Cheap gimmick UV won't do it but is great for green water. Based on your pictures, you must have a pretty good one.

Hi Ken, good to see you on MFK.

Here's a definitive article on UV Sterilization. Over the years it has been revised and become more complicated (The Category A,B,C has been added)

This chart taken from the article is very useful:

Not too many fish keepers attempt Level Two Sterilization but aim for Level One Sterilization. The flow rate of an FX-6 would give you a turnover rate of 1.5 in your 360 gallon tank. Keep in mind that each UV sterilizer has a recommended maximum flow rate. You will need 25-40Watts. If you read the article, the author sells UV sterilizers.

I run a 40W Lifegard Aquatics on my 300 gallon tank. Bulb, ballast and glass sleeve need changing periodically and can get expensive. The unit is also tall and probably wouldn't fit in a stand. I liked what I read about the quartz bulb. I'm going with two 120W UVs on my big tank.

There are lots of UV sterilizers to choose from.

op - how’s this going?

pacu mom pacu mom -

2 - 120’s on your big tank? what size?

i’m looking into this - have 750g’s total volume -

looks like they have 80w or 240w

thanks all!

My tank is not set up yet. Tank is 15' x 4' x 4' and we will be using a 405 g sump for redundant filtration. At the time I purchased the two 120 W UV sterilizers, Marine Depot happened to be out of the 240W units, so I opted to go with two 120W units. Did I need two 120Ws, no, but redundancy is a great thing. I'm really pleased with the 40W unit on our 300 gallon tank, so decided the increase in gallons merited a total of 240Ws. The 40W UV is run on the return end of an FX-5, and I like doing it this way. The 120W UVs will be plumbed in conjunction with two Ultima II 4000s (for primary biological filtration) with Reeflo Barracuda Gold pumps. The flow rates of the pumps match the recommended flow rates for the Ultimas and the 120W UVs. Matching the flow rates is important.

While I love my UV sterilizer and wouldn't have a tank without one, replacement parts can add up quickly. The bulbs, ballasts and quartz sleeves will need to be replaced periodically. Replacing all three can almost add up to the cost of a new UV sterilizer. Still, for my fish, it's a must have. BTW, I've been buying bulbs and ballasts from Amazon which has better pricing. Unfortunately, they are not careful packing the ballasts, but just throw them in a box.

holy wow! 2300g’s so jelly! running out of house for something that size....

i see they have some horizontal 3” or 5” (not sure what’s the diff with this) but a single 120w for my 750g’s should be good....

good tip on the amazon!

thanks for info!

We had no room. Decided the tank had to go where the garage was. So we tore the garage down.

The addition for the fish room took on a life of its own.
