Just having a new tank build,i need to find a uv sterilizer bigger enough for 500 gallons, can i use a pond one or are they just a purifier?

anyone know what wattage i need for 500 gallon and flow rate?

any help would be good people.

012.JPGpond UV are no good on a tank they work different to a tank uv

just get a few tank uv and run them back to back i run 4 x 25w back to back

with uv its all about flow rate you cant push to much or the uv does nothing

this is my setup

I recently just started using a "Coralife Turbo Twist 12X 36watt". My tank is a 450 gallon with a 145 gallon sump and it keeps the water crystal clear! I use the Hydor seltz L40 pump for flow. Easy set up when you have a sump.

I had a 25 watt aqua uv on my 450 gal but it didnt do much. I switched to a 57 watt and it works great

i still think its better to run them back to back rather than one unit

with running say 4 x 25w back to back you get a much longer contact time with the light

with one large unit the water only comes into contact with the water for about 30inch with 4 x 25w the water has 4ft of contact time :)

I believe that a strong UVC is better than many low UVC's
after several years must surely change parts gaskets, etc. much easier to start leaking and more to think of a strong show-through watertight at once rather than for it to go through lot of units.. looks like Doctor Snuggles lives with T1KARMANN LOL

one of my units is 6 years old never changed a thing on it apart from the tube/bulb

its a UVS you need not a UVC most UVC are made for ponds which do nothing on a tank

What do you mean that the smaller one didn't do much, you cannot tell without some way of counting bacteria. The uvc does very little, if anything, for clarity.

I run the same uvc as t1 and run them back to back (in series) like him and I use a small dedicated pump in my sump so that the flow rate is slow to give a good contact time. I have found that after 5 plus years the hose tails can become brittle, if you disturb them they can break so it's good to have a spare.

Pond clarifiers are no use to rays, they are a different contact time and flow rate to kill free floating algae and not bacteria which is what people should be using the uvc for on a ray tank.
