UV sterilizer for 500 gallons

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Could someone please explain UVS? Ultra violet light wave is only measured in UVC.

Definatly right about contact time But if a UV sterilizer works like it should there is no need to run in line one Quality product should do the Job....

Uvs is not a measure, it is a shortened version of ultraviolet steriliser as opposed to clarifier.

The reason for running back to back in tandem is that a 25w uv may not be enough for the size of tank therefore more help, plus if contact time is agreed to be important then if you have it slightly wrong the bacteria that survive get a second pass of another uv. I agree though if you could get a tank uvs that was designed for the correct volume of the tank then it would be fine, you just tend to find that they do not go big enough for most ray tanks.

the reason i run them back to back is 1 x 25w lets you pass 1700 lph throw it if you x that by 4 then you can run a much larger pump throw it at 6800 lph

no need to add more pumps just add more uv units to match the flow rate of the pump

UVC is a ultra violet clarifyer which is to get rid of green water this type of unit normally uses a bulb

UVS is a ultra violet serilizer which will kill green water and free swimming parasites this type of unit uses a tube giving better contact time with the light

you need to run the UVS 24/7 and make sure you change the tube every 6 months but the standard UK spec UVS which are 8 15 25 and 30w you can get a arcadia tube which will last one year

I run uvc pond with stingrays lots years never got some parasites what do you have to say abut that T1?

Thanks for the explanation. So UVS and UVC is a brand designator for type of design. Makes sense because I design UV systems and the same unit can go on a pond, tank, hospital and swimming pool. To simplify our catalog we call our stainless stain models UVS and our plastic models UVP but no matter what you call it it still uses the same UVC bulbs. If you are seeking an ultimate UV bulb then step up to Amalgam bulbs which is the highest output lamp (micro watts).
The only way to determine the UV dose of any system is to run the number in a UV program. The program takes many factor into account: clarity, efficiency/wattage of the bulb, number of bulbs, chamber size, size of the quartz sleeve and flow rate of the pump.

Here's a plot of a four bulb UV. Kill rate is best close to the quartz sleeve. Multi bulb designs allow other bulbs to kill when the pest is too far from the other. Bulbs are spaced so that in between the four bulbs intensity is still good for the kill. That goes the same for the chamber wall. It keeps the pest close enough to the UV ray.

  1. It probably says that no parasites have been introduced. Have you scraped for parasites or had a faecal sample tested? You could have parasites but not know, a healthy specimen can keep them at bay.
