An island somewhere......
I'm seriously entertaining putting UV Sterilizers on one, if not all my tanks. The tanks are 270g., each will have two Fluval FX5's on them.... I need a UV Sterilizer that will accomidate that amount of water (either on a separate powerhead or in-line with one FX5). Any suggestion on size/wattage of UV Sterilizer or brand/type? Thanks in advance.

i dunno much about them
so what do they do exactly(sorry to derail)

They run water into a compartment where there's a bulb that produces ultraviolet light. The shortwave radiation kills off any floating organisms, such as algae (therefore giving you crystal clear water) or the pathogen that causes ich in fish.

I would go for the coral life twist. Mine stopped working but it was a great unit and well worth the money (No algae or ich while it was running) They are shipping me a new one right now and are not insistent that I return the other . I would go for the 36 watt for that size. I got an 18 on my 55 hooked up to my eheim 2215. Slow flow through it means it absolutely sterilizes the hell out of the water hehe.

Thanks Fellas. I'll look into the Coralife.

my theory (though may not be true) is that you need to use it in moderation. When fish have nothing to fight, they become weak.

I guess that makes sense. In that case you'd have to have the sterilizer running on the tank for the rest of the fishes' lives.

I have heard that before...I dont know if I buy it or not. It only kills the ick that passes through the UV...so there could still be some in the tank....but even with out that...I dont know if they become week...jmo.
