Hey everyone! After losing three ebjds to random deaths, I think I might try again. People tell me that EBJDs have specific requirements such as very clean water, special food, and etc. Some people have recommended the use of UV sterilizers, since they would kill bacteria and such. I think this would work because most people say that EBJDs have internal parasitic problems.

Is it worth the money to buy a UV sterilizer? What kind should I get? Please post links or pictures of the UV Sterilizer... THanks!

They are definitely worth the money imo, id need to know the size of your tank before recomending one. Either way im sure its under 500 gallons. I like the turbo twist made by coralife. The largest one is only 160 bucks on drsfostersmith. And if your under 100 gallons You could get the small one for only $80. I like how you can hook them up to a canister filter or really any hose in line as well as you can just hang it.

I would have u.v. sterilization on all my tanks if i could afford it. except for maybe my reef.

i have a 55 gallon tank and later maybe a 125 or a 180 gallon tank. but right now, im focused on the 55. Would this clear water maybe affect my dempsey's breeding habits? Like make them ready to breed?

It can only help (I recommend them for all fish tanks, especially q.tanks)...Keep the water neutral to slightly alkaline, cover the filter's intake with foam so it doesn't suck up the fry and give the mated pair some privacy.

The twist style lamp keeps the water in contact with the light longer. So have internal baffles to do the same thing. There are self-contained models (with their own pump) also.

DO NOT OVER-FLOW THEM or they will be of little use.

How's your budget? They go up from there...

I got the PetSmart ones on my tanks (9 watters on 20 and 29, 25 on both the 55's). Work great for me,crystal clear water, algae has diminished.

Got 'em on times running midnight to 8Am.

Only bugaboo is they are powered with bricks (12 volt); they take up a lot of power strip room!

In my personal opinion, the EBJD has these problems because they are inbred for color. While inbreeding magnifies positive traits, it also magnifies undesirable traits, and I think this fishes immune system may be affected.

is there a reason for only running them for 8 hours? rather than constantly?

Only if you are using them just to control suspended algae. If you are using them to also control disease causing parasites and/or bacteria then they should be left on 24/7.

You should get one of these power strips, or one like it. I have them, you can turn the plugs so that you can easily set up a bunch of "bricks" without wasting room
