I have been thinking about getting a UV sterilizer for one of my tanks, and wanted to see if anyone else uses these and if they are worth it. Do they really help and which brand is best?

I started using one on a tank where I was having trouble with beard algea and it worked wonders. Since then I've installed them on several of my tanks. As far a brands go there are several good ones. Wattage is important based on the size of your tank and dwell time/flow rate, the amount of time the water stays in contact or is exposed to the UV radiation. The longer the water stays in the unit the more effective the unit will be. Google UV sterilizers to get a better understanding of how they work and what they do. I would recommend them.

I enjoy having mine, I didn't have any issues but got one for a great price so bought it as a preventative type of thing.

Thanks everyone! Is it good for preventing any parasites like ich or HITH? I know HITH is an internal parasite though.

If you get the right wattage for your flow rate then it can kill parasites in the water column. Here's just a quick and easy chart I found.

I use a 9w AquaMedic UV on my 120g and will be using a 18w TurboTwist on my 210g that I'm still setting up. I mainly use it for water clarity. I tend to get green water if I dont use UV.
