UV sterilizers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't. Don't see the need for one.

i use one on my reef tank. but not on freshwater

I use a 9w AquaMedic UV on my 120g and will be using a 18w TurboTwist on my 210g that I'm still setting up. I mainly use it for water clarity. I tend to get green water if I dont use UV.

I guess that is what I will mainly use it for. This will be going on a 150g that is near a window, so I have had bad algae problems in this location in the past.

The UV is great for free floating algae that gives the water that green tinge. It does not fix problem of algae that covers the decor and glass. You will need to try to reduce the light coming in, manually scrub decor and keep up on water changes. With my tank I magnet clean the glass every 2 weeks right before one of my large water changes and pull out plastic plants, decor for a scrub down every 3-4 weeks right before a big water change also. Realistically they really are not that bad, I just like a sparkling clean tank! Also my water change routine consists of a small (10g) poop vac every two days and then two large (50g) changes a week.

I was in the same boat as the guys that did not think it was needed. Then after seeing the veteran guys with massive massive tanks and extremely expensive stock, you could say a filter is a filter, a heater is a heater, and so on. However, you see those devastating threads where everything is lost because of x factor. Once you cross the threshold of being a monster fish keeper, you will do and buy almost anything that can mitigate a foreseeable disaster. In this case, a uv sterilizer on the low end is 50bucks( ?) up to 300, break that down per day on the high end it's a buck of insurance for me per day.

Yeah, I bought it as a preventative type of thing. My water was nice and clear prior to having it on my tank. I found it for a good deal so I jumped on it.
