I know everyone and their mother has one but the very spiral design that increases contact time dimishes it's effectiveness by increasing the distance of the water from the bulb. Aaaand there are tons of ballast issues. Try aqua ultraviolet. Expensive but by far one of if not the best. I have uv's on both my reef and stingray tanks, as long as you dont use them whilst cycling you should not lose any nitrifying bacteria, only pathogens and algae spores.
