i have a heat lamp with uva light bulb does this do the same thing as uvb light or should i get a uvb heat lamp bulb?

you need a UVB as well for most lizards and turtles. UVB is usually only in florescent bulbs so you will need to get one.

I read many people having success like this w/ monitors. You have any litertaure to back this up?

Even though D3 will work for most animals, i would have to agree with SimonL, the animal should have its natural environment matched as much as possible as opposed to using supplements and vitamins.

Sigh...monitors don't need UVB because they typically take whole vertebrate food like mice. Just like snakes...you have "read" this huh? Do you keep and/or have any experience with monitors or other lizards? After 10 years in pet stores, I've seen a lot of lizards housed without proper lighting, and the detrimental results.

As for literature, I suggest searching the internet (or reading any reptile care book ever).

I have seen a tegu that some guy substituded d3 for uvb and it had an awful case of mbd. You can't substitute UVB that's just being lazy IMO.
