i will be more then happy to tell you that if you want to switch over to sand in your cichla tank then you are out of your mind!

first off your tank is going to be a cloudy mess since cichla are ramboncious* not sure on spelling. second off is it is a monster pain in the *** to clean sand, you cant just dig your syphon into the sand like you would with gravel.. you have to hover, sucking up more then you please. fish waist gets caught in ever crevice, behind plant under driftwood, in sand pits, in the corners and you always see a pile of crap in your tank swirling around even right after you do a water change. another thing is i dont know if it hold biological bacteria as would gravel.. there is less surface space and no water pockets between sand like there is with gravel, so less oxgen can be reached into the gravel. i would imagen fine sand would be even worse. sand also acts as a natural buffer and will raise your ph extremely high which i really dont recommend for cichla and other soft water fish. i have sand now in my aulonocara african peacock tank and i had sand in my sps coral tank which i dealt with for about 7-8 or years, its a pain (i just broke the reef down and made it into an african tank) if anything you can always do what i did and go with fine gravel... thats the closest thing i will ever get to sand in my cichla tanks.
