V. Regani behavior

Just put the wood in the tank don't worry about putting near where they are hiding. They will come out and get it. You may need to sit still when they do. But it will start getting them into the habit of looking around the tank for food.

They have a couple medium sized pieces of wood already, as well as a clay pot, some larger rocks, and artificial plants. I've read about the con-specific aggression among Vieja, however I've heard it's best to have them grow up together to try to avoid aggression. I think they're still pretty small and may be able to adapt to that lifestyle. It's very interesting that your Argentea doesn't shred "Lucy"! I really want to try a couple of Synspilum, if my LFS still has them.

I'd try something like a school of a dozen tetras or a similar number of sword tails.
The swords would be geographically correct, as would central Amer tetras, but if you wanted color, serpae tetras.
Regani are not piscivores so predation shouldn't be a problem.

I had to remove the argntea to save its life, and it was also an ornery cuss.

Along that note. I have a 250gal Vieja/Paratheraps tank. They have all either been together since they were small, or they have been with others and moved into this group. Either way, they all have been sharing the tank with other Vieja/Paratheraps species.

Here is a video I took today of my tank.

Fabulous tank! Growing them together in that large tank from youngsters may be your key secret. My largest tank is 150 gal, and it doesn't seem to be enough to keep aggression down.

Wow! Nice fish and tank. I love your Vieja/Paratheraps. Do you experience much aggression? I see literally none in the video at all. Do they pick on the plecos? I phoned all my LFS and managed to find some 4" Argentea and Synspilum. Do you think that's already too large to introduce to my 180g with my 2" Regani? Thanks for the posts so far everyone!

Please note, Shawn's tank is not what I would consider the norm, and also most of those fish aren't fully mature. It can work, but be really careful and realistic and have a back up plan. I made a thread recently on CA cichlid community tanks where more people chimed in on what has/hasn't worked for them, including more details on Shawn's tanks... Definitely worth a read!

I grow the fish out in a 150 grow out, then they graduate to a larger tank.

The only aggression is between the Argentea with each other, and the BB. Nothing physical, just a lot of flaring. As for the pleco's, no they dont touch them. Adding the Argentea and Syns to the existing tank should work. The Regani has already established itself, and it will investigate. Just keep an eye on everything, and I think you should be fine.

I have to agree, my tanks arent the norm. Not sure how I do it, or if I am just lucky. Id like to think its more than luck since all of my tanks seem to be working. As for most of the fish not reaching maturity yet, is true, but from my experience I consider when they are at their young adult stages as being the most aggressive. There is still a chance that **** hits the fan, but I dont think that it will. I have a Parachromis tank with multiple Parachromis right around full size, and my 300 has several different adults in it also. I had more issues in those tanks when the fish were around 7-9". Kinda like a young adult between 18 and 27, when their testosterone is raging and they think they can fight anyone. :)

That thread that ACWO started does have some great input on some nice community tanks.

Good luck.
