v. synspilum growth...how big in captivity?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You will find lots of conflicting info on them. Some say they grow fast, other say slow. Some say they can have fry at 4" and other claim it takes them 2 years to mature. I would say about 14" for males given proper space. Here are a couple of mine

Here's mine. Got him at around 4" from Jeff Rapps back in July/August. Never gotten a picture that truly captures his full color but these are the closest I've come. The pics are a couple of months old but the video was taken yesterday.

He is a slow grower for me. He is in a 180 Gallon with 5 of his fry that are now around 3 inches. I bought him last May 2010 at about 5 inches now almost a year later he is about 7 inches. This pic does not do his colors any justice, he has a "oil in water" color glisten to him.

I have been raising synspilum for a very long time, they grow fast, and they can breed at 4 inches,my largest(first picture)is 15 inches in 18 months. he grew just as fast as my oscar. Large water changes and a varied diet always produces the best results.Heres a few of mine, enjoy

Thanks, just takes time and patience, alot of water changes and plenty of room to grow and they do great, one of my altime favorites in the veija family.

I'm planning on keeping some with my Festaes in a 120g tank.

That might work when they are young, but when they are bigger and mature 120 will be kinda small and might cause agression problems, for synspilum 6 foot tanks are better(125 gallons are bigger)
