You can ask someone to come feed them and do water changes or you could buy an automatic feeder. I also believe fish could go 4 weeks without food, it just may not be healthy for them without water changes

4 weeks without food is perfectly fine for the majority of fish. I've gone 3 months without feeding before. And their is a member on here who said he went on a 3 month vacation without any waterchanges in between and his fish were fine, temporary sky-high nitrates is ok as long as it is temporary and temporary alone. Just give them 1 colossal feeding when you get home followed by 2 90% water changes. That should do fine.

I speek from experience alone as I've been through exactly what you describe and the fish were doing great when I got home. Little skinny, which is actually very healthy for fish.

If you're lightly stocked, your better off going the 4 weeks without the water changes than risk someone else trying it and have a mishap occur with your tank

Usually what I do when I go on vacation is buy 100 live ghost shrimp(roughly $12) and about 100 small guppies( roughly $12) and then leave them in my tank. Since they are all small they have a chance to hide and get away while my predators actually have to seek and destroy their prey. Sometimes when I get back I will still find a few left over. And we're talking a payara, a gar, an ornate bichir and other various predators. It adds a bit of a realistic hunting aspect for the fish yet the feeders can still live a long time as they will eat the algae in the tank. It's actually really cool to watch and I occasionally do this even when I'm home.

3 months is a hell of a long time not to feed your fish... I'm not sure how many could realistically live that long with no food...

But i agree with using an auto feeder if its small fish, might be your only option?

I went away for 5fthis last summer. The fish were fine. I setup auto feeders and had as much pothos roots in the tank so they can help with the nitrates.

The one take away from this experience is you should know what will happen if the water level lowers...that was my only mistake. I had this spray bar half an inch below water surface aiming upward to create a wave...but when the water dropped that water started to spray out.. About 20 gal of water or more went on the floor.
