Bigglesworth I was wondering why you starved your fish for three months?...Evaporation might be an issue if you can't get someone to come over and check on things.

Well at first it was to pellet train my datnoid. That took 2 months of no food. After that I got lazy and was being drowned in projects so I decided it is no big deal to go another month - maybe even 2 more. And the plus was that I didn't have almost any nitrates in my tank and was able to go by 3 weeks testing every day before the nitrates got to 40ppm. So less water changes.

Not to sound mean but if you are not to attached you could always sell the fish and then replace when you come home then you won't be worrying and can enjoy your vacation

40 Gallon is small enough to setup at someone elses house temporarily. If they are not experienced with fish then id have them feed them less than you feed them now, and either do one 50%water change or none at all and fish will be fine.

^^^op, don't do what Mr. Bigglesworth do :D

No offense to bigs, but yeah, i agree, don't do what Bigglesworth did with his dat...

I'm gonna scare you. It effing drops from time to time! I have a friend who bought it for the same purpose as you. One day he found the container floating on the water with contents soaked. The water quality went haywire. When I took care of their tank for 2 weeks when they took a vacation, one time I found it down on the water also. He has fancy goldfish so no one would likely knock the autofeeder. Better if you can buy even that of Chinese brand Resun AF-2005D (I've had this for months without issue) or any other brand. It's not the brand, it's the mechanical design or he is just utterly unlucky with his unit.

I left my fish with an automatic feeder and lights on timers for a month while I was away at a training exercise. Everybody was fine when I got home but this was a very over filtered and lightly stocked 20g.

I used that same unit continually for literally months without an issue. I worked odd shifts and I liked only having to touch the tank once a month.
