Anyone know if they ever got that great white they wanted? Saw a tv program on Travel channel a few weeks back, and it was about the largest aquarium in europe, something oceanografic de valencia was the name I think.

Tried to do a google search, but most of it came back in spanish, and its been over 30 years since I used spanish 101. :grinno:

Nope, last GWS an Aquarium tried to raise died. All attempts to keep GWS in captivity have failed to date.Funny, such a vicious and feared animal is so delacate/sensitive to transportation.

Theres probably something in the ocean that keeps them alive, that the zoo's cant get correct or have no knowledge of.

Strangely enough they refuse to eat in captivity. There was a public aquarium though I forgot the name, that has manage to rear a great white to the size of 2m though they had to release it because it started eating its tankmates.

Hmm..oh well..I guess no one seen the show, allegedly they plan to use a technique that puts sharks into a trance, and they tried it on a GW off the coast of Africa, and it was very promising.

The head aquarium keeper at Valencia and his senior staff believe GW die in captivity because of stress of moving them, so they are hoping that trance technique will help in bringing a GW into their aquarium facility.

Too bad there wasn't a follow up on the show, that would have been interesting to see if they can accomplish that.

Monetery Bay Aquarium in California has been able to keep Great Whites in captivity for over a few months. Go to their website for more information on that.

They were very successful with two GW now. The first was a small female that had no problem eating. They had to release her because she killed two of the soupfin sharks in their open ocean exibit. the were getting so much grief from activists that some of their funding was threatend. They were so successful because they first moved her to a 4 million gallon fenced enclosure in the open water for a period of time. After she was very comfortabel there, they moved her into the open ocean exhibit in the aquarium that is still just over 1 million gallons. Monterey Bay aquarium does so well because they pump millions of gallons of acutal marine water in and out of their facilities daily. They have closed circuit filtration for their more specialized exhibits, but the a lot are also open circuit and linked to the actual bay. A very impressive 3 story public aquarium. a huge 3 story kelp forest exhibit also!!!
