I heard they blew us up. Everyone in this damn valley talked about it that whole week

I'm not sure I'd refer to MBA's white program as a 'success' at all. I'm sure Waterbaby will chime in sometime. They released teh female due to other issues. They lost her tracking shortly after release - which usually means the animal didn't make it. The male was released and suffered the same fate. Several weeks prior to kicking him out into the ocean, he was almost dead on exhibit.

The reason they don't do well in captivity is at least three fold.
First, we don't have the water volume to do it. They need space, period.
Second, they aren't found among massive groups of other fish (like what most places display). Believe it or not, whites stress easy from being over stimulated like this. Stress results in poor metabolism etc.... Then end result is an unhealthy animal.
Third, tank edges suck. As newbie as that comment is, they just don't fair well with the edges. There is a crew working on a white specific tank in the US. They are creating a MASSIVE bowl shaped tank which will use a shore line rather than a fixed edge. This way the sharks will have a better feel for it's boundry prior to smashing it's nose into the wall.

So far nobody has tried to transport one long range. So I'm not sure where they are getting that info. MBA pulls their's rather close, and has a lot of success in getting them on site. Taking one from South Africa seems like a long trip for one. But then again, we moved a pair of 7 foot adult green saw fish up to Minnesota from "Down Under", so anything is possible with enough money. I hope to get out to the Cape this Summer and work closing with a white shark research team down there.
