Valuable lesson learned

Man,it's a shame this happened. Like everyone else has said, learn from it and move on. You can't change what happened so no point beating yourself up so much.

This hobby can be brutal. You really have to be on your toes, at all times. Everything you do needs careful consideration. I'll give you an example. I have a long length of 1" flexible pipe for draining my tanks during water changes. During the water change the pipe goes straight to an outside drain.

Before I had a change of stock in my 180g I wasn't worried about fish getting sucked up because they were all such a size that they wouldn't have fit in the pipe. However, when I got my 360g all my big fish went in there and I restocked my 180g with smaller fish, many of which could easily be sucked up if they got too near the end of the pipe.

I realised this and so got some thin plastic mesh and zip tied it over the end of the pipe to secure it. I have piece of mind now whilst doing water changes just by thinking ahead and solving a problem before it even became a problem.

Water changes are real problem areas because if you get side tracked by a phone call, or the kids are playing up, or some salesman comes knocking at your door etc etc etc, absolutely anything, then before you know it your fish room is flooded, or you're putting stone cold water in your tank or you've forgot your conditioner etc, we've all been there at some point.

Who says fishkeeping is a boring hobby!

I've flooded a tank or the trash can at least 6 times, the worst was when I had my trash can filling then I went to another room so I could order some fish food online then I got to browsing other foods. When I was done I remember briefly thinkning about watching an hour of tv before going back or getting some food. I decided not to, went back, then instantly remembered I was filling it up then started running. About 5 gallons were on the floor but it got cleaned up within 2 hours or so.

I live on the top floor of a block of flats. Below me is a snooker club. I fell asleep filling my big tank :( I got into a bit of trouble

ok , you have learned a huge lesson, we all have killed (a few) fish by being stupid at one time or another ,, some of us didn't learn very quickly (like me) but eventually "got it" .. you have that part whipped already, and you seem to really care about your fish.. now take a minute to adjust the attitude back to happy and put the new knowledge to use... we all know there are fish out there that can use your skills to live a better life..:arapaimag

I can just hear the commentary now......."and all he needs is this last black for a magnificent 147 break, hold on hold on, where's them feckin drips coming from". :grinyes:

Hahaha I brought the suspended ceiling down about 2 hours before it opens up. I work nights and days shift and I was so excited to get my big boy filled that I didn't want go to sleep. The hose filled it. It then flopped out. I was woken by wet feet after about 30 mins free running :( I'm so ****ing glad I was insured !!!!! I now take prozak before I fill my tanks hahahaha

Condolences for the loss. It absolutely does not matter how long you keep fish or how many tanks you have, stuff like this will continue to occur from time to time. As others have stated, learn from the loss and move forward better prepared.

I keep a large Rubbermaid bin in the basement which serves as a winter home for the school of Rosy Red Minnows I will place into my outdoor pond for the summer months. Water changes are carefully done...so how did 3 Rosy Reds appear in my storm water sump? Not a filtration sump, but the actual pit in the concrete floor slab into which drainage tiles around the house empty. No idea how long they were there, and not even sure how to prevent it because I can't figure out how it happened.

Onwards and upwards.
