I just purchased a Vampire Pleco for only $40.00. I was utterly amazed, since I've seen a couple for over 80. I can't find too much information (or even pictures!) on them online. Can you guys gimmie some tips/advice/random facts?

Much appreciated.

Ps. First post - woo!

High temperatures (78*-82*), fast flow accomplished with a powerhead with sponge intake, meaty foods such as bloodworms preferred. Highly carnivorous loricariid.

Welcome!

$40 is not a bad price at all, even for a juvenile. How big is he/she? Love to see some pics!

From what I've read they max out around the 10" mark. They are omnivores and should eat anything from zucchini to blood worms - though I'm not sure if they're very good algae eaters. They also prefer a decent amount of current in the water and a pH on the more acidic side.

Thanks so much guys. I have it in my tank with an albino Oscar and Firemouth Cichlid. I'm just hoping the Firemouth won't start nipping at the Pleco. It's about 4 inches long....and this is the best quality picture I could get so far. I'll keep trying, hehe.

Leporacanthicus sp. I believe. If so they tend to be fairly shy and territorial. As already stated they will accept a varied diet with both veggies and meaty foods such as market shrimp, krill, ect. BTW, nice pick up and welcome.

Thanks guys! I tried negotiating the price down, but the guy was getting angry, ahha...let me have it minus the tax. Here are clearer pictures.

Here's a bigger picture. Their "skin" texture is phenomenal. I can't stop staring at it. LOL I think I made a pretty good choice for my first ever Pleco buy. Woot!

Oh boy....my oscar has been bullying me baby. (I moved him to another tank) I wonder is Melafix okay for the vampire? A fsh store owner told me that it may too be harsh and to only use it for sturdy fish like oscars, but another said it's fine and organic and will due no harm. Whatcha guys think?
