i found a vampire tetra at one of my favorite fish stores, but its 60 dollars and i don't know much about them. Its about 3 1/2 4inches. Is 60 dollars a good price?

They are 28 at my lfs. Very cool fish! I love how they stand on their head.

Does it have a red tail at this age? Chances are it's a hydrolycus tatuaia, in other words, a red-tailed payara. Should get about 18" long with lots care, and will be very hard to ween off live feeders.

If you are thinking of buying a payara, you should probably get this species, as the hydrolycus armatus is a larger predator and will need more room than you're willing to give him. Red-tail payaras are a perfectly viable solution for the average aquarist, as they take a looong time to get full size.

I say that now, and I'm the one with an armatus with severe back damage from a stupid user error.

And to answer the question you asked, $60.00 is decent. I'd say at 3.5", you could probably do better than $60.00, but hey they don't show up regularly at the LFS.

Ask what they're feeding it. If they have it off live food, then that's a very good price. Yeah, it's that hard to get them off live food.

I think Scombs are more popular in Lfs than Tat's, not yet even close to Armatus (still waiting for RW to bring some in :().
So I think it would be a Scomb. Where i'm at they have scombs for about 40-50 bucks (rip off, but people buy them:screwy:). If it is indeed a Tat, I think it would be a close to high price but still a good pick up indeed. I bought my Tat at 8" for $90.00 and still can't get him off live foods:cry:
Does your Armatus eat non-live?? If so, HOW DID YOU DO IT?????????????

sounds pricey. But if I were you i wouldn't impulse buy. Research them a lot and then reconsider

a pic would help us tell u what ur up against.

Marmot... Def what Vamp said (shhhh, he is like one of the king of Payara (has a monster armatus:naughty:):D)

Theres info smeared all over this site about how to get them off live. it's really not that difficult....... The longest any of the 4 species I have owned took to get off live was like 6 weeks.

Just search the Payara threads...this subject comes up in almost all of them.

I didn't ask the original question, and yes I agree that vamptrev is a payara information haven.

JD7.62 got the armatus off of live food, and I purchased the fish off him, but still had to toy around a bit to get him to eat prepared in my tank. It just takes time, and the willingness to simulate live food with the shrimp.

best
