Hi all,

First off I'm looking to adopt or purchase medium, and large species of catfish during a trip I'm taking this spring close to summer. Just let me know what you have and I will arrange to pick it up in the following states. ND, SD, MN, IL, KY, TN, NC, VA, WV, OH. There could be a few other states if they are not too far out of the way of my trip.

Been a while since I've been on MFK. Just to let everyone know I'm still in the game, and comming back with a vengence lol. I'll be purchasing some large aquariums soon and need to get some catfish to go in them. Thought I would try this first. I'll be making a trip to PA this spring driving the whole way. I'll also be visiting my family in NC. This will be a 3 week long trip. The main objective of the trip it to visit with science centers to gather data for a book on catfish anatomy I'm working on. I've been invited on a grant to go and study to collection in PA. I'm currently contacting other institutes to study their collections as well. I will be conducting some Genetic studies as well. Blood samples of all the fish I collect will be genetically tested. I cannot go into too much detail of what exactly I'm doing just yet, but plan on posting it up on MFK as it goes along. Let's just say it will probably make a lot of MFKrs happy and some others maybe not so much. Your fish will not be killed or have anything weird done to it. Genetic mapping and some other exciting possibilities are in store for them. :naughty:

Go MFK

I have a Mystus Nemurus also known as a Hemibagrus wyckioides. Is an old picture and it is bigger now. By the way I am just south of Des Monies Iowa

Oh my God!!! I'm so excited for you, and unbelievably jealous!!! What an amazing opportunity.

As for kitties.... I'm in SoCal, but several months ago I had been given a small niger cat who I took in as a foster with the possibility of permanently adopting him if necessary. He's probably 14" or so right now. I can't think of a better home to adopt him out to, so he's yours if we can get him to you.

Best of luck to you on your trips. Good to see you back.

Tnx it's great to be back on here. Might be on and off for a while, but once I get things set up I plan to bring everyone up to date on what I'll be doing.

What a beautiful fish. I would be interested although that would probably mean a dedicated tank lol. How large is it currently?

Looking for other than channel catfish. Blue cats, and flatheads would be nice, also white catfish would be cool. My studies are mainly in the area of pimelodidae right now, but eventually will encompass all catfish. The first book I'm authoring will deal exclusively with pimelodidae and their hybrids.

that would be awesome. Would probably be tough to ship huh? and pricey.

It is a great opportunity and I'm hoping on it with everything I've got. Do you still have that huge horse of a niger? that was you if my memory serves correctly. If by some misfortune it ever dies I would love to opportunity to mount it's skeleton and study it.

That brings up something else. not sure if I mentioned it earlier, but I will be taking any frozen catfish that anyone has also. Mostly large specimens. I might be taking a uhaul trailer to carry fish in. I must also note that probably 16" or so would be the largest fish I could bring with me right now. My car will probably only carry 3 coolers for transporting the fish as it's small and the trunk will have my clothes, blanket, pillow, and some catfish skeletons I'm bringing with me for the institute to study.

Also looking to meet up with fellow mfkrs along the way. If anyone has an open couch, sleeping bag, spare room, and a shower I can use along the way, and also maybe some water changes for the fish That would really help bring down the costs of the trip and would let me be able to pack more into my car. Really looking forward to seeing some cool setups and some awesome catfish!

Cliff my house is open if you make it down to Texas. Have you checked with the Dallas World Aquarium to see if they are interested in getting in on this study? I was thinking about contacting them myself soon about some of the things we discussed.

I can get you some white catfish next summer. I catch lots of yoy in our seine survey. They would probably ship better than larger specimens too. They aren't native to Maine so I "remove" all that I catch. Might be able to get you some brown bullheads too.

If you need just a fin clip for DNA, that's no problem either.

I'm certain we could figure out shipping (drilled plastic tub inside bag of water inside shipping box), but it would be a bit expensive and possibly a little risky. It would be best if he was driven, but I think if someone really knows what their doing and cost isn't prohibitive it could work. He's just hanging out in my 600 with the big guys right now, so there is zero rush. Just know if we can work it out at some point, you can have him. He's a friendly little guy. I'll keep the potential for meeting up somewhere in mind when I plan any trips.

Don't know if it was my fish you were thinking of. My two big nigers only are about 30" or so. They've still got some good growing to do.

Fortunately, I can't say I currently have any catfish skeletons, but if that sad day comes I'll ship a giant frozen catfish to you to skeletonize for your collection.
