Various tetra species

I thought all characins were tetra, no?

even things like African odoe pikes

Tetragonopterus was an old classification for a group of similar fish referred to as Tetras (shortened) that were later reclassified into different groups as their scientific differences were discovered.

Tetra is today a non-scientific term (ie common name) for a range of similar - looking fish many of which were formerly classified as Tetragonopterus.

Piranha are not Tetra today and never were, neither were they Tetragonopterus.

So to call Piranha Tetras is wrong on both counts.

It's clear to me what the original poster meant. He wanted us to discuss the smaller colourful fish known as Tetras and didn't mean to include Piranha's.

I used. to be large cichlid keeper for many years and I viewed tetra as nothing more than cichlid food. I was wrong and recently rediscovered the joy of keeping tetra with cichlid. There are many large tetra that make good company with cichlid, many are active shoaling fish that contrast well with stationary cichlid, and cichlid tend to ignore non food size tetra. There are dozens species of hyphessobrycon alone, and my definition of tetra extends to Characin like barbs and rasborus that are shoaling community fish, so the choice is unlimited. A few predatory tetra such as pink tail chalceuus are more cichlid like in that they are con specific aggressive, solitary and stationery in demeaner.
