Vegan /vegetarian fish food

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My goal ,as I am an animal rescuer, and as all my fish are rescued not bought or being kept for any reason except giving them a good and happy lives, is to give them good and suitable conditions. In addition to that I'm trying to see if there are ways to minimise harm to other creatures and to the environment. Both being hurt alot from fish food industries both for human and pet consumption.
Not going to comment on the rest of this post, as some other members have already done so and made some very valid points. If it’s an ethics issue you’re worried about, it seems like the brand New Life Spectrum makes it a point to use sustainable ingredients whenever possible. These links are from NLS’s website. I wasn’t aware of this myself until this thread prompted me to look into it. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised.

Those krill may be sustainable as a species, but the fact that a given number of them must be sacrificed for the sake of food manufacture makes it difficult to maintain the level of virtue signalling that this issue requires. Each of those processed krill had a mother, a father, siblings, friends...deserved a rich full life...and is now being unceremoniously digested in a very primitive and messy way. We owe them more than that.

Yeah, but...Buffalo Bill was out strictly for himself...rather than blathering on about improving the world...

The guy made a hell of a skin dress though. I doubt if Save Them All can say that. Might be wrong. If so it's made of some really skinny fish and a lot of seams but art is where you find it. Might smell a little like meat and a mower bag. Mmmm...

I wonder if people that say stuff like that kill flies or do they try to usher them out the window. Are spiders ok? Maybe a little mosquito smacking outside is not too bad?

I think the level of arrogance being displayed here by the OP is sickening. Not only is the OP intentionally wanting to give their fish a crap diet in the name of some BS ethics, but is also trying to force their BS ethics on captive animals. If you want to eat soy and take vitamins, that’s your choice, but these poor animals that you’re torturing in the name of rescuing do not have a choice, because of you. They’d be better off in a frying pan than your aquarium

I remember something about PETA getting butthurt because Obama swatted at a fly while giving a speech instead of gently shooing it away

Now I'm not saying that for sure a certain omnivore or carnivore specie will live healthy lifes on a vegan diet, but I dont see any reason to just decide that they wont. So I'm checking asking and researching to see if theres any info available on this.

Well, I'd say you need to stop researching immediately, as you've had all the answers you need in this very thread!

Were you serious when you mentioned taking taurine out of a cats diet and giving it a synthetic taurine supplement instead?

What is the f*cking point of that!!!! Just give the poor cat, a carnivore, MEAT!!

I bet you're one of those people who has a lettuce leaf for every meal washed down with about 50 supplement vitamin tablets and a glass of water.

This dude needs to get away from keeping anything alive. Maybe just get robotic pets. I know wowwee has a good line up.

One of the important factors in feeding fish, is that unlike humans, "vegetarian fish" have developed extended digestive tracts that allow them to get the benefits of less protein filled nutritious diet. If you feed carnivores and omnivore such a diet, they are not equip to deal with chronic problems are the result.

Above is the mostly vegetarian species, Cincelichthys pearsei. There are a few others, but in the larger scheme of things, vegetarians are few and far between compared to omnivores, and even with these, many crustaceans and other animals are consumed in the planted eating process.
One of the reasons certain fish display the colors they do (such as Vieja) is they are frugifores, that derive certain vitamins from fruit, and is an important component of the diet.

Catering the right diet components are, for health and even something simple like presentation very important,

In this context Buffalo Bill was a rescuer too.

That looks just like my dog…

She may be a small white dog that can’t even properly digest most meat without allergy or stomach problems (thanks generations of inbreeding), but she’s still a carnivore!

To the OP, you have to think about which animal you value more - the one you have taken under your care to give the best life possible, or the one that evolved specifically to be a prey organism. All life requires something else to die to keep it alive. Even plants gain nutrients though decaying organisms.
