I like the quote about people not caring about plants because they are not charismatic animals... too true.
Even though they are found in virtually every Wal-Mart, the natural populations are far more important because of their inherent variation. It'd be like comparing wild grass to domestic wheat... we know where wheat stands in terms of disease protection (none!).
