I preffer the look of a sand bottom or fine gravel bottom tank to a bare tank. As far as cleaning, as long as you run you gravel vac through the gravel there will not be a build up of waste. It will require slightly more maintenance. I have my gravel vac plumbed into the house drain so the time I spend is minimal, may not be possible for others.
