Very Frequent Small Water Changes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nitrates are a steady 6ppm. Low compared to everything I've seen.

I was under the same assumption you were, that along with my inconvience of large water changes, is why I started just doing smaller changes each day. Personally, my fish seem much happier and their vigor is amazing, however I was pretty undersure about the long term. I have seen amazing growth in all the fish since I started this, though, that is fact. I guess I will just keep close tabs on the water parameters and see how things go. So far, I am happy with this routine. My arms are getting big enough from the bucket moving every couple hours. ^^

I think that with that frequency you don't allow params tos tabilize, water to stabilize, fish to stabilize..ok, so you don't like mega wc's ( neither do I ) change 10% everyday...It is a 70% turn over rate in a week,.... a pretty good schedule imo....

Sounds like OCD to me lol....:D

Don't you ever go out? What happens if you miss a couple water changes?

I think this is truely excessive. You are changing almost 50% of the water per day. Sticking the hose in the tank 5 X per day has got to stress the fish out a bit, no? What are you going to do if you get more tanks???

I would go to once per week, 50% myself. Thats what I do for all my tanks and nitrate levels stay low and all fish are healthy.

Burt;)

Nothing wrong with frequent water changes since this is what a constant drip system does. If the total amount you change is excessive however, this may cause problems if the water source ever becomes a problem. My town water supply for example gets ammonia and nitrite spikes so doing water changes during these times would be bad.

Another factor to consider is that even if your water conditions are kept pristine and your fish are accustomed to perfect conditions, this may not be such a good thing as their natural immune and resistance may become weak. Just a few things to consider, there are lots of ways to keep fish.

I've missed water changes for about 3 weeks, and my fish were perfectly fine. Probably no big deal. I've missed them for a day, or missed some per day, and it doesn't affect them, to my knowledge. Fish are breeding and their colors are good.. so I'll assume it's going alright so far. I've always wanted to try what Jack Wattley does for some of his Discus. 35-40% W/C daily, and on Juvie tanks 100% daily. Could be interesting.

That's Discus tho and they really need pristine water to thrive.

I think you're ok. I have a 1-2gph water changing system and it seems to work better than a few bit water changes because it's more stable.

I do 50% water changes weekly. I say you can never change enough water, but getting the hose out 5 times a day must be a pain.

I would think thats a bit much. Seems like a lot. Also the fish you have are pretty hardy and should be able to flourish without that much WCing. And are u running some type of porn site on the latenight?
