No, and your lucky you were there. You can get something as simple as a piece of plexiglass (not too expensive, depending on your tank size, or really anything that light can penetrate through to put on top that won't absorb water. Make sure it's weighted down if it's light too..
I would really look into doing this as soon as you can. All it takes is a jump and a good hour of him out of the water, and he's a goner.
