Hey Liz, sorry I only just found it, the pm didn't alert me like usual lol. They can be sold as both, because we all know common names and plecos don't mean anything, but originally I believe it was Panaque maccus (and cf) that are sold as the clowns and the Candy stripe as Peckoltia vittata. This is a Panaque maccus, or L104, so I guess you could say a "clown pleco".

Thanks Davo i appreciate your reply and now i know.. :D

Nice find. Had one years ago and it was the laziest pleco I've ever seen. Wouldn't eat any algae or tablets. WHen I put in flakes for the other fish he would let go of the glass and float upside down to the top like he was dead and eat the flakes. They are pretty cool looking though. See that you still managed to get a new fish while I was gone anyway.:grinno:

Probably wasn't feeding it right, or you used tablets it didn't like. Veggies and worms for this pleco, and of course some soft bogwood.

Now you tell me. Where were you about ten years ago when I could have used that advice. I just didn't like running to the tank everytime to make sure he wasn't dead. Something about watching fish stop moving and float to the surface was kind of unnerving.

I had a young common that did it, it grew out of it though, and only did it for a short while.

I've never had another one do that before or since. Is that a common action for them or just an odd occurence of certain types.

There is a thread on this behaviour somewhere, but yeah, it's documented to happen with numerous species of Loricariids. It can often be a hint though, you aren't feeding it enough/properly.
