story sounds believable to me, where are you from ?
Gachua are known for living in ditches and leaf litter, they are quite comfortable leaving the water and crawling across the land , not long ago i caught my female gachua traveling across th kitchen in search of a bigger tank lol. If there is a water way near by or even a runoff then there are probably more Gachua then you realize living in thre and you only spotted this one because he was avoiding an attacker. the first thing my snakeheads do when attacked is leave the water, I've seen them sit on top of floating driftwood or on top of filters in tanks and of course they'll climb right out if they can.
I've seen them get badly injured in fights does not take long, I've had many with ripped fins, even large bites and they always heal up in a few days, had one loose his whole tail once an most of his dorsal fin and he was completely recovered in a couple weeks time. Channa have a remarkable ability to heal and regenerate fin's /flesh.
